Xeikon to Demonstrate its Latest Technology Platform at Labelexpo Americas

Xeikon (www.xeikon.com), a division of Punch Graphix, legendary for pioneering the first digital color presses, today announced that the company will be demonstrating the Xeikon 3300, a radically new digital color label press, at booth #6135 during Labelexpo Americas 2008.

The Xeikon 3300, which was unveiled earlier this year at drupa 2008, represents a quantum leap in label print quality, offering true 1200 dpi at four bits per spot. With a top speed of 63 feet per minute, it is an extremely fast digital color label press, particularly suited for short to medium print runs and just-in-time jobs.

“Our presence at this year’s Labelexpo Americas 2008 is a true testament to our position in the label and packaging industry,” said Michael V. Ring, VP of Sales & Chief Marketing Officer of Xeikon’s North American operations. “We’re thrilled to be able to demonstrate the Xeikon 3300 for industry enthusiasts.”

Attendees are invited to witness the power of the Xeikon 3300 firsthand, as it will be producing a variety of label applications throughout the exhibition. These applications will be produced on a range of UPM Raflatac substrates (www.upmraflatac.com). In addition, Xeikon will also display various label samples printed on substrates supplied by Fasson (www.fasson.com).

Offering a duty cycle of 2,300,000 feet per month, the Xeikon 3300 features full rotary printing technology, enabling printing at rated engine speeds, for maximum productivity. Labels with variable formats and sizes can be printed in the same run, leading to increased productivity and reduced waste and costs. At the show, the labels produced on the Xeikon 3300 will be die-cut, UV-Coated, super-glossed and rewound inline on the GM finishing equipment (www.gm.dk), a leading provider of advanced solutions for the self-adhesive label converting industry.

The Xeikon 3300 can print the four process colors plus a range of standard or custom spot colors for perfect reproduction of brand image. It can also apply special security toner for anti-counterfeiting applications, and opaque white to create that sought after ‘no label look’ on transparent labels. In addition, the speed of the press is independent of the number of colors that are required for a specific job. The labels produced at the exhibition will demonstrate this capability of the Xeikon 3300.

Another exciting feature of the Xeikon 3300 is its X-800 digital front-end. Based on open standards, the X-800 enables the implementation of fully automated workflows in any production environment, integrating seamlessly with any MIS. Its modular set-up allows separating pre-press functionality from press operation. Among other things, the X-800 offers ICC color management and allows post-RIP color adjustment; minimizing downtime while offering extra flexibility. The X-800 processes all common input files and significantly lowers the threshold for including metadata such as sequential numbers or barcodes. At Label Expo, the Xeikon 3300 will utilize workflow software solutions of two pre-eminent players in the labels and packaging space, EskoArtwork and Kodak Prinergy Powerpack Workflow System.

While at Labelexpo Americas 2008, Xeikon will be a part of several other initiatives including:
· Digital Experience Hall – The Labelexpo show floor will have a specific area designated to the vendors of digital technology, called the “Digital Experience Hall”. As one of the major players in the digital color space, Xeikon will have a prominent presence in this hall.
· Executive luncheon – Xeikon will be sponsoring a luncheon for the executives of top 250 label, flexible packaging and folding carton converters. This exclusive invite-only luncheon will take place on September 10 from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm.
· Press conference – Organized by Labelexpo show management, this press conference would give an opportunity to industry journalists and editors to learn about the unique capabilities and value-proposition of the Xeikon technology and direct specific questions to Xeikon experts.
· Gather on the Green – Xeikon would be a part of Labelexpo’s “Gather on the Green” initiative to showcase the latest in green and sustainable technology. The Xeikon 3300 utilizes dry toner electrophotography, which is truly environmentally friendly. In fact, the Xeikon FA toner is FDA-approved for use in certain food contact applications.

In addition, Xeikon has also initiated a “Do-the-benchmark” initiative for label converters to get a real proof of Xeikon 3300’s printing capabilities. Under this initiative, label converters would be able to choose from certain selected label stocks and upload some of their own files to be printed on the Xeikon 3300. Label converters are encouraged to go to www.xeikon.com or visit Xeikon at booth #6135 for participating in this unique initiative.

VSOP: the ultimate press for the label market

Jim Hammer heads up a trend-setting printing company
in the United States. He invested in the VSOP from Drent Goebel. What were his
motives for changing over to offset and how does he assess the press in day-today
production?
Lead, don’t follow. That is the philosophy of Hammer packaging, a 400-man strong
company based in the Rochester, NY area. The company specializes in film and paper
labels including cut-and-stack, and pressure sensitive.
The company’s growth under current leader Jim Hammer has been impressive to say
the least. He took charge of the company when it was a $ 1 million business and, last
year, it reached the $ 100 million level.
Technology and innovation are key in the company’s growth and are a major part of
Jim Hammer’s vision of industry leadership. A great example of this philosophy is the
company’s investment in a Drent Goebel VSOP press with a 33-inch web width. This
investment was made on the belief that Hammer’s customers would benefit from a
lower cost alternative to gravure printing of shrink labels, while offering a higher quality
option for flexo shrink applications.
Jim Hammer explains: “The technology this press offers is nothing short of
spectacular.” He believes it fits well with the company’s strength in offset printing and
can be counted on to expand Hammer’s range of products and services – one of the
company’s key investment criteria.
A unique value-added alternative
“Our best opportunity to enter new markets that are traditionally serviced by
rotogravure and central impression flexo is to offer a unique value-added alternative for
which we have affinity,” he says.
“With the VSOP we are now offering offset printed shrink sleeves, ROSO labeling, and
high-end roll-fed labeling. Ultimately, we see ourselves expanding into form, fill, and seal packaging as substrate technology grows to require fewer extrusions and more
use of lamination.”
“With this kind of investment we aim to stay ahead of the pack, which is a big challenge
in today’s packaging industry.”Drent Goebel exhibits at booth 1611 during Labelexpo 2008

Blumer thinks big

One World – One Drupa – One Blumer. The world’s leading provider of complete solutions in the label and card processing sector is famous for its innovative drive. At this year’s print and paper trade fair Drupa , the Swiss machine manufacturer was working with the Spanish firm Kmec to demonstrate how you can get from the printed roll to banded stacks of labels with “no hands”. This fully-automated complete solution means that some of the previously vital cutting processes are no longer necessary. Blumer also presented a fully-automated strip cross-cutter for large format and all-round labels for the very first time.
All those interested in label and card processing had written a visit to the Blumer stand A23 in Hall 6 firmly into their trade fair diary. Once again, the market leader in punching, cutting and banding was bringing comprehensive solutions for all budgets. Sheet offset solutions were the focus of the last trade fair; this time, Blumer was concentrating on fully-automated processes from the roll phase on.
There was a live demonstration of a complete solution in which the Label CS roll cross-cutter from Kmec operates together with the two Blumer machines, Atlas 1110-LS and Atlas 40 inline. They make it possible to punch and band labels directly from the roll in one single step. The roll cross-cutter cuts, counts, presses, turns and automatically transfers the stacked strips to the Atlas 1110-LS for punching and banding.
This innovative solution means that several time-consuming and cost-intensive steps, to date common practice, are now no longer needed. The entire process is automatic and can be easily monitored. All the usual label materials can be processed, from paper to plastic. Manual feed is still possible for sheet-fed offset printing as is the case for all Blumer machines.
The brand new Atlas 40 was also sure to spark great interest. This fully-automated strip cross-cutter with a banding unit deals with cutting large format labels (jar labels etc.) and provides an impressively user-friendly way to process heavy stacks of label strips. Although it was being presented at the Drupa in public for the first time, the machine is already in use with one customer.
The company was also using the trade fair to present two basic models for small and large formats. “Space restrictions at the Drupa mean that we can merely demonstrate the range of the possibilities and solutions we offer” explains Blumer Sales Manager Rolf Manser. “Yet thanks to our broad know-how, quite unique in its scope, we can still find the ideal solution for each customer”.

Sidel at Brau: spotlight on Beer

Sidel will present its latest equipment developments as well as its recent installations of complete beer packaging lines for both glass bottles and metal cans. These projects are based on original, high-performance technologies for filling, pasteurization, labeling, end-of-line and conveying, and they are adapted to the specific needs of each of the world’s regions.

The PET Alternative
While glass bottles and metal cans dominate the market, PET bottles are proving increasingly attractive to brewers. Lightweight, clean, unbreakable, recloseable and 100% recyclable, PET also lets brewers diversify their formats – for larger-sized containers, PET is essential – and shapes. Finally, PET requires less energy during the manufacturing process.

For the past several years, Sidel has viewed PET bottles as a potential stimulus for the world beer market. The Group has contributed to their development by proposing unique solutions. The Combi, a machine that incorporates blowing, filling and capping, has been specially adapted to beer bottling, ensuring unmatched productivity. For smaller formats, Actis™ offers the only barrier treatment solution for industrial-scale production of long-life PET bottles. Finally, Sidel designs PET beer containers with highly innovative shapes, taking into account both appearance and technical constraints. Come see them at the Sidel stand.

The Sidel Group is one of the world’s leading suppliers of beverage packaging equipment. It employs 5,500 people around the world and is a division of Tetra Laval.
